Germany Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) Guide for Sri Lankans: 2026 Amounts, Providers & Steps
The German embassy will not issue your student visa or Chancenkarte without a blocked account (Sperrkonto). In 2026 that is €11,904 for students and €13,092 for the Chancenkarte. This guide covers which provider to use, exactly how to open one from Sri Lanka, and the mistakes that cause appointment delays.
Your visa appointment is booked. Your documents are ready. Then you discover you need €11,904 in a German blocked account, and it takes three to five business days just for the wire transfer to clear. Candidates who find this out too late miss their appointments.
For student and Chancenkarte visa applicants, a blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a legal prerequisite. The required amount is set annually under Section 2(3) AufenthG (German Residence Act). In 2026, that is €11,904 for a student visa (€992 released per month) and €13,092 for the Chancenkarte (€1,091 per month). The German Embassy will not issue your visa without a valid Sperrkonto confirmation letter from an approved provider. The good news: you can open a Sperrkonto entirely online from Sri Lanka without visiting a German bank branch. This guide covers which providers accept Sri Lankan applicants, what their fees are, and the exact steps to complete the process before your embassy appointment in Colombo.
What is a Sperrkonto?
A Sperrkonto (literally "blocked account") is a special bank account where your deposited money is locked; you cannot withdraw it all at once. Instead, the bank releases a fixed monthly amount. This structure assures the German embassy that you will not exhaust your savings in the first month and then become financially dependent on the state.
Once you arrive in Germany, the provider releases the monthly allowance into your regular German bank account. After your first year, any remaining funds are released in full.
Who needs it: Non-EU applicants for a student visa, language course visa (over 90 days), and Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card)
Who does NOT need it: Ausbildung visa applicants. Your signed training contract and employer confirmation of monthly pay serve as proof of financial self-sufficiency.
Who does NOT need it: Skilled worker visa applicants. Your employment contract covers this.
Who does NOT need it: Family reunion visa applicants. Your sponsor in Germany covers the financial proof.
How Much Do You Need in 2026?
The German government adjusts the Sperrkonto minimum annually based on the BAföG (student support) reference figure, set under §2(3) AufenthG. In 2026, the figures are as follows. (Source: German Residence Act §2(3) AufenthG; Federal Foreign Office, 2026)
Note: These are minimum amounts. Some German states or specific universities may request higher figures. Always confirm the exact current amount with the German Embassy in Colombo at colombo.diplo.de before transferring funds. (Source: German Embassy Colombo, 2024)
Which Providers Can Sri Lankans Use?
Four providers dominate the market. All four accept applications from Sri Lanka and can be opened entirely online. Below is a direct comparison based on 2026 fee structures. Fintiba and Deutsche Bank are the two most commonly accepted providers at German embassies globally, though all four listed here are accepted at the German Embassy Colombo. (Source: DAAD guidance, 2024; Fintiba, Expatrio, Coracle official sites, 2026)
As of mid-2026, Coracle has paused new blocked account applications. Check coracle.de for current availability before starting. Expatrio and Fintiba are the two reliably available options for Sri Lankan applicants right now.
Fintiba vs Expatrio: Which Should You Choose?
Both are BAMF-approved and accepted by all German embassies. The main difference is cost and banking jurisdiction.
Choose Expatrio if cost is your primary concern. At €149 for the first year versus €278 for Fintiba, the saving is €129, enough for two months of groceries. Expatrio accounts are verified within 1 business day, and the process is entirely online.
Choose Fintiba if you want a German BaFin-regulated bank backing your account. Fintiba partners with Frankfurt International Bank, which is regulated by Germany's financial authority (BaFin). If you pay by credit card, your blocking confirmation can be issued the same day, which is useful if your visa appointment is close.
For most Sri Lankan applicants with a standard timeline, Expatrio is the practical choice: cheaper, fast, and fully accepted. If your visa appointment is within 2 weeks, choose Fintiba and pay by credit card for same-day confirmation.
Step-by-Step: How to Open a Sperrkonto from Sri Lanka
The entire process can be completed online without visiting a German institution. Allow 3–6 weeks before your embassy appointment to be safe.
Register on your chosen provider's website (Expatrio or Fintiba). You will need: passport scan, proof of university admission or Chancenkarte eligibility, email address.
Complete the KYC (Know Your Customer) identity verification. Both providers use video-based ID verification that you complete from your phone or laptop in Sri Lanka.
Receive your IBAN and account details. The provider issues a German IBAN for your blocked account.
Transfer the full amount to the IBAN. From Sri Lanka, you can use your local bank's international wire transfer service or a remittance provider like Wise or Western Union. Transfer the full €11,904 or €13,092 in one transaction.
The provider confirms receipt and issues your Sperrkonto confirmation letter (Sperrbestätigung). This is the document you submit with your visa application.
Submit the confirmation letter at the German embassy in Colombo along with your other visa documents.
After you arrive in Germany and open a regular bank account, notify your provider. Monthly releases begin from the following month.
Wire transfer fees from Sri Lanka to Germany typically range from LKR 1,500 to LKR 5,000 depending on your bank. Using Wise can reduce this significantly; check rates before transferring.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the errors that cause visa appointment delays or rejections related to the blocked account.
Transferring the wrong amount: Always verify the current year's figure directly from the German embassy in Colombo or the Federal Foreign Office (auswaertiges-amt.de), not from blog posts alone. The 2026 figure for student visas is €11,904.
Applying too late: Both Fintiba and Expatrio take 1–5 business days to verify and issue your confirmation. Add 3–5 business days for the international wire transfer to clear. Start at least 3 weeks before your embassy appointment.
Transferring in instalments: Send the full amount in a single wire transfer. Multiple smaller transfers can delay account activation.
Using an unapproved provider: Only use providers approved by the Federal Foreign Office. Deutsche Bank, Fintiba, Expatrio, and Coracle (when available) are the four approved providers. Do not use general savings accounts.
Ignoring currency conversion: You must deposit in euros. Your Sri Lankan bank converts LKR to EUR at the time of transfer. Check the exchange rate and add a small buffer (e.g., transfer €12,000 instead of exactly €11,904) to account for minor conversion differences.
Confusing the Sperrkonto with other financial proof: For an Ausbildung visa, a signed training contract replaces the Sperrkonto. Do not open a blocked account for an Ausbildung application, as it is unnecessary and non-refundable fees apply.

For a student visa, the required amount is €11,904, released at €992 per month. For the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), it is €13,092, released at €1,091 per month. These figures are set under §2(3) AufenthG (German Residence Act) and updated annually based on the BAföG reference amount. Can I open a German blocked account from Sri Lanka without visiting a German bank?
Yes. Expatrio and Fintiba both operate fully online with video-based KYC that you complete in Sri Lanka. Once your identity is verified and your transfer clears, they issue a confirmation letter accepted by all German embassies. You do not need to travel to Germany or visit a branch.
Do I need a blocked account for an Ausbildung visa?
No. The Ausbildung visa does not require a Sperrkonto. Your signed vocational training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) and the employer's confirmation of your monthly training allowance serve as legally sufficient proof of financial self-sufficiency. Opening a blocked account for an Ausbildung application is unnecessary.
Is Expatrio or Fintiba better for Sri Lankan applicants?
Both are accepted by the German embassy. Expatrio costs less at €149 for the first year vs €278 for Fintiba. Fintiba uses a German BaFin-regulated bank (Frankfurt International Bank) and can issue same-day confirmation if you pay by credit card. For most applicants with normal timelines, Expatrio is the cost-effective choice.
What documents do I need to open a blocked account?
You need: a valid passport, proof of university admission letter (for student visa) or Chancenkarte points calculation (for Opportunity Card), and a valid email address. Both Fintiba and Expatrio verify your identity via a short online video call using your passport.
How long does it take to get the Sperrkonto confirmation letter?
After your wire transfer clears (allow 3–5 business days from Sri Lanka), Expatrio issues confirmation within 1 business day and Fintiba can issue it the same day if you pay by credit card. Total time from registration to confirmation letter: 5–8 business days typically. Start at least 3 weeks before your visa appointment.
