The au pair visa is one of the most accessible routes to Germany for young Sri Lankans. You need a confirmed host family first. MALIROSA handles the documents and visa application from there.
The Germany Au Pair Visa (national visa, §19c AufenthG in conjunction with §12 BeschV) is available to Sri Lankan nationals aged 18–26 who have a signed au pair contract with a German host family. Requirements include German A1 language certification, private health insurance, and a minimum pocket money of €280/month. Maximum working hours are 30 per week. All guidance follows current regulations from the German Federal Foreign Office.
MALIROSA provides consulting, preparation and support services. Visa decisions are made exclusively by the responsible embassy, consulate or authority.

What MALIROSA does and does not do
MALIROSA provides document preparation, au pair contract review, German A1 language preparation, and visa application support. We do not place au pairs with host families. You must find and confirm a host family independently before engaging MALIROSA for visa support.
You must be between 18 and 26 years of age at the time of your visa application. There are no exceptions for non-EU nationals.
Proof of basic German language skills at A1 level. Accepted: Goethe-Zertifikat A1, telc A1, or equivalent. You must have the certificate in hand before applying.
An original, signed au pair agreement with your host family. The contract must specify working hours (max 30 hrs/week, max 6 hrs/day), pocket money (min €280/month), days off, and language course obligations.
A formal invitation letter from your host family confirming the arrangement, the address in Germany, and the agreed start and end dates of the au pair stay.
Use AuPairWorld, AuPair.com, or Cultural Care to contact families. Interview carefully, check references, and agree terms before signing the contract. This step happens independently of MALIROSA.
Once you have a signed au pair contract, MALIROSA reviews your full document set: contract, health insurance, language certificate, and proof of funds, then prepares your visa application.
MALIROSA guides you through the embassy application process: completing the Antrag form, booking your Colombo appointment, and preparing for your interview. You submit; we support.
Allow 4–6 months from confirming a host family to departing for Germany. Embassy appointment wait times in Colombo are currently 2–4 months. Book early.
Use established platforms such as AuPairWorld, AuPair.com, and Cultural Care to contact and interview host families. Take time to verify the family and the arrangement before signing anything. This step is your responsibility. MALIROSA does not place au pairs with families.
Once you and your host family agree, sign a formal au pair contract that covers hours (max 30/week), pocket money (min €280/month), accommodation, days off, and your language course obligation. Keep the original, as you will need it at the embassy.
Book and sit the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or telc A1 exam. MALIROSA offers A1 preparation courses online, designed to get you exam-ready in 6–10 weeks. Allow additional time to receive your official certificate after the exam.
Yes. The German Embassy requires proof of basic German language skills at A1 level. A Goethe-Zertifikat A1, telc A1, or equivalent certificate is accepted. MALIROSA offers online German courses from A1 specifically structured for au pair and visa applicants.
No. Host family placement is not part of MALIROSA's service. You must find and confirm a host family before approaching MALIROSA for document and visa support. Established platforms such as AuPairWorld, AuPair.com, and Cultural Care are used by families actively seeking au pairs. Once you have a confirmed host family and a signed au pair contract, MALIROSA helps you prepare and submit the visa application.
German law sets the minimum au pair pocket money at €280 per month as of 2026. This is not a salary. It is a cultural exchange allowance. In addition, your host family covers board, lodging, and typically a public transport card. Some families voluntarily pay more, but €280 is the legal floor.

After your au pair year
The au pair year ends after 12 months. After that, popular next steps include transitioning to a student visa to study at a German university, enrolling in an Ausbildung vocational training programme, or continuing your German language classes with MALIROSA to reach B1 or B2 and open the next pathway.

The au pair visa is limited to 12 months and to candidates aged 18 to 26. If you need a longer-term route or do not meet the age criteria, two other pathways are worth reviewing: the Student Visa, for candidates with a German university admission letter, or the Skilled Worker Visa, for qualified professionals with a recognised degree or vocational certificate and a job offer.
